Local Produce - Organic Farming

Burt`s Greenhouses — Salad greens & sweet potatoes

Brian Burt and Ruth Hayward are partners in life and business, jointly operating Burt’s Greenhouses on Maple Road in Odessa, Ontario since 1981 and successfully building their operation from 7,500 to 90,000 square feet of growing space.

In 2009 Burt's Greenhouses received a regional Premier's Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence. The award was related to the work done to modify their Biomass Combustion heating system to make it more efficient and less polluting.

In 2007 Burt's received their first regional Premier's Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence. That award was related to a unique system of "hot beds" that allow plants to be grown out of doors but still be protected from the extremes of temperature they could experience on cold spring nights.

Both of these awards show Burt's Greenhouses commitment to reducing their carbon footprint. The greenhouse industry is a heavy user of fossil fuels but with the biomass heating system the heating can become close to carbon neutral.

Patchwork Gardens — Fresh certified organic vegetables from Battersea, Ontario

Roots Down Organics — Various organic vegetables from Gananoque, Ontario

We are a small, family run farm whose primary goal is to provide affordable organic produce to other families.

Roots Down Organic Farm is owned and operated by Jeff and Sue Klug, along with their two children Mara and Neville. We are located north of Gananoque near Seeley’s Bay, Ontario, in the heart of the Frontenac Arch Bioshpere. Our fields were first cleared in the 1850’s and have been farmed ever since. In 1972, the farm was purchased by three families who over the years have planted more than 10,000 trees. Through their efforts, what was once one large cornfield has now become many small fields surrounded by forest, the perfect balance between farm and nature.

Healthy soil grows healthy food, it's as simple as that. We strive to achieve this by using compost, cover crops and biologically based soil amendments. All weeds on our farm are manually removed, no herbicides are ever used. Insect pests are dealt with by manual removal, covering of crops with physical barriers, and by encouraging beneficial insects to feed on them. No genetically modified seeds or plants are ever used on our farm. We have been Certified Organic by Ecocert Canada since 2007.

Wendy`s Mobile Market Take home a taste of the country

Wendy Banks and Rick Trudeau are the owners of Wendy's Mobile Market and Wendy's Country Market in Lyndhurst, Ontario. Wendy, a 6th generation farmer, understands all too well the important roll food plays in a person's health. In fact, the development of their unique door to door delivery service was the result of Wendy's own search for better health and more local food sources. Together, the couple`s desire to educate others on the natural health benefits of eating local farm fresh products is equal to their desire to help local producers reach new markets. Wendy takes the local food movement and food traceability seriously and in 2008 was chosen as Leeds and Grenville County winner of the Premier's Award for Agri-Food Innovation Excellence.
